"Habitat" Quilt and "Quilter's Magazine"

The pattern is called "Habitat" from Forth & Sixth Designs. I have two daughters fighting over it and it's only lap sized. I found some stunning batik fabric from my LQS and had to use it. It's nice to do something quick.

I went through my "Quilter's Home" magazine again this morning. Being the suspicious person I am, I usually check for a catch when I read quilt books/magazines. Bipolar people are just that way I guess. Bipolar people are always on defense it seems. So many magazines have nothing I can relate too which is why I hardly ever buy them. I flip though them at the store but eh...for the same money I can buy a pattern or a notion. I gave this one a second chance as I felt I needed too. It's been sitting on the edge of the computer desk since I last read it.

I let down my guard and started again. I really loved the article on the lotus slippers. I fell in love with them and the detailed workmanship on them is amazing. I love that he breaks down the barriers of old quilting verses new quilting. I live in a small town where there is the "correct" way of quilting and if you aren't doing that you are a loser. Believe me it can get pretty ugly in a quilt shop. (long story) I got tired of being a "loser" to these people and have been doing my own thing for almost a year now. The freedom has allowed my creativity to soar now that I'm not in a stuffed box.

I did check out his website and read through some of it. I loved the poll on having colored sewing machines. If they made a racing blue color sewing machine I'd be all over it. The old sewing machines from the 60's and 70's came in colors. Or they need to come with interchangable color plates like they do for the "Guitar Hero" guitars or like for cell phones. I'd drop the baby blue plate of my Janome 6600 in a heart beat for a racing blue one.

I think the next poll is about giving up your day job for quilting. I don't know. I love being a mom and my biggest fear is that I would turn into a greedy, snobby, stuck up person like I see so many "professionals" doing. The quilt store I was kicked out of had the nicest lady until she got her longarm machine and forgot the front of the store. We were interupting her "work". I don't want to to do that. Being bipolar is rough enough and I know I'm cranky now. Why make it worse?

I may just get my first magazine subscription.

Love your quilt, it came out beautiful. That same one is on my list, very long list, of quilts I want to make. Oh boy, it I could have the sewing machine color of my dreams, it would be metallic purple. Not a bright purple, but dark and mysterious, with all those sparkles of metallic in the finish. I can also relate to your comment on quilt stores and the way some shop owners act. I have been in a few that I have turned around and walked out of after the very rude, cold reception I have received. My money is as green as the next customers, all I ask is to be treated in a humane manner.
