Puppy Proofing Your Sewing Area

With Emma, I haven't had a chance to do any quilting. She's exhausting. She's MORE than exhausting. She loves fabric if she can find it though. She'll run down the hallway as fast as she can with a fat quarter daring you to catch her. Then it's a tug of war game of "Drop it" until she does. All fabric has been located (I hope) and put away. She is learning "Drop it".

I've had to put up the foot pedal and the machine cords so she doesn't eat them.

I've had to puppy proof the entire sewing area. Pins, needles, threads, anything hanging over the table, pens, pencils, stencils, etc. It's probably the cleanest it's ever been after getting her.

My house is the cleanest it's ever been and she STILL manages to find something she shouldn't have. ARGHH!

For those of you who have pets, how do you keep your sewing area pet safe? Potential hazards that I haven't thought of?

Assuming you can't just shut the door.

try putting a child's safety gate up in the door way. That way she can see you put she can't get in.
She will learn eventually but right now she's like a toddler that wants to play with everything.

She sure is a cutie!

I think you're doing everything you possibly can! Keep at it! I promise she'll settle down!

Bethany, everything you think they can't possibly get into, they do. Be very careful with your threads. Do you remember about 2 years ago when Holly pulled hemmingworth thread all around the apartment? It was still on her lip so I pulled and pulled. I bet about 2 yards came out of her and then I followed about 100 yards around the house. Luckily we've never had a vet visit but I know I'm not as diligent as I should be.

Don't forget to take a ridiculous amount of pictures as she grows!! =) Maybe you need to start making her bandanas? Or this could be a fun project to do with your kids and maybe get them interested in sewing. =)

When mine were puppies I put the crate in the same room as I was sewing in and put them in the crate while I was working. They got to be with me (and got used to the noise of the machine), but they were out from underfoot and unable to get into anything.

We always followed up sewing time with crazy playtime in the backyard.

Now they just curl up behind my chair and dare me to roll over them. :D

Along with teaching her to leave it and drop it, you may want to teach an exchange. Where, she gives you whatever she stole, and you give her something better in return. And when she is in your sewing area with you, give her a special chewy toy that she only gets at that time, so she will be focused on it while you are working. One of my corgis always wants to be on my feet, which is a problem when sewing, so I taught her to lay on her bed when I ask her to, so she is not pushing down on my foot feed. So she lays in her bed and chews her chewy. The other corgis just come and go, but my shadow has to stay nearby. Good luck with her she is darling.

Hi Beth: I just found your blog and I was reading your comment on your new puppy. I had to laugh because in June of last year we got a new puppy and Tucker does the same thing your puppy does. It is sooooo funny. I have a gate up now, I just can't get anything done when he is in there. He also gets into everything in the livingroom, which is puppy proofed as well, when I am sewing. But Tucker is soooo much fun and I don't know what I would do without him.

? Do you know Gwenn Madea? She actually sent me your store name. She had bought some material from you and sent to me. Crows in red high heels. I LOVE that fabric. Well anyways, she is my sister-in-law. Small world.

I am in hopes to get to your shop one of these days.

Have a great Sunday,
Debbie
